Although quality, one-on-one time alone with your significant other is a must to build and maintain a strong long-lasting relationship, it can be really difficult to pay attention without making the conscious effort to do so. The phone rings, emails flood in, there’s a new show to catch, and the distractions are endless. Here are some quick ideas that will help you and your partner focus and give each other the attention you both deserve.
1. Each week, review your schedules and make an appointment with each other. Yes, that’s right. Life can be hectic and it’s all too easy to put your loved one last on your “to- do” list. It is often necessary to plan ahead to have those precious moments alone. If you have children, consider hiring a babysitter so you can go out or arrange to put them to bed first.
2. Make a point to put your phones away, both of you! Your phone can be a number one distraction at anytime of the day, and especially when you’re dedicating time to your partner. It’s rude and unnecessary to have answer text messages and phone calls while spending time with your love. Nothing is more important than giving them your undivided attention.
3. Turn off the television. It’s eye candy and may lead your eyes to wander and your concentration wane, so turn it off. And your ipad, and your computer and anything that may distract you should be moved out of sight or be turned off.
4. Talk about your relationship or things important to both of you. Spend this time getting to know one another a little better. Ask questions so you can find out what makes your partner happy and what might be upsetting. Your partner is always changing, find out and discover their new experiences, interests, etc. You have the rest of the day to speak about the children, so let this time be about you two.
