“The clean up woman will wipe his blues away
She’ll give him plenty lovin’ 24 hours a day
The clean up woman, she’ll sweep him off his feet
She’s the one who’ll take him in when you dump him in the street
So take a tip, you better get hip
To the clean up woman ’cause she’s tough
I mean, she really cleans up”
Those were the words of Betty Wright, an older generation jazz musician, whom I did not know, until I heard the sing titled, The Clean up Woman. It was both a fun song, and one that chastised ladies, who dump good men for whatever reasons, only for the clean up woman to show up, and take the man in question.
The question is, who is the clean up lady? She is the one who doesn’t mind your left overs, who picks the guy you dumped in the gutters, cleans him up, and makes him king. Not only his outward appearance is cleaned, his emotions and mind take some washing too, so he can forget you in totality, and the only woman he remembers for the rest of his life is the clean up lady.
You and I could fall into the category of the lady who dumped guys, we could also be termed as the clean up woman, after all we are with someone’s ex. I was with another lady, Mimi, when I watched the video of the song, and as the words poured out, her own words tumbled out, about her lost love.
As a young lady, she had met, and got into a relationship with, a colleague of hers at work. It was not acceptable, so the guy left the company and went to another organization. Thankfully, it paid higher than the former company, so no worries financially. Importantly, they could see each other openly. Everyone knew they were an item, and the reason her boyfriend had left the company, but that did not stop some men from making passes at her.
Unfortunately, she fell for one of the lies of one of these men, whom she only discovered to be a married man after she got pregnant for him. It was as though the scales that had blinded her fell from her eyes, but it was too, late. Her beau was deeply hurt, his mind, his body, his ego, every part of him took a serious bashing from that betrayal.
That was when she even realised all along that she did not love him as much as she had professed. She also realised that his love for her was so real and deep, he couldn’t turn completely away from her, even when she was carrying another man’s baby.
And then the clean up woman came along. It was her friend, her best friend, who turned out to be the clean up woman. No, it was as though she snatched him from her, but being her close friend, Mimi’s beau turned to her friend to pour out his heart to her, and that was how the closeness started. From calls in the middle of the day, to midnight calls, to both of them falling heads over heels in love. It just happened for them, that even Mimi couldn’t be angry at the turn of events.
Even if she wanted to get angry, she did not have the energy, given the way her pregnancy was draining her. Before she had her twin girls, Mimi’s friend and her beau were already married. Their love was a testimony of what Mimi had lost. Maybe if her ex had been involved with someone else, other than her bestie, it would not have hurt as much, was her thought at those times when the heart-wrenching feeling hit her.
While she became a single mom of twin girls, whom she struggles with, her bestie enjoys the love of her man. It is only now that she can, in all sincerity, say she was the one who lost a good thing, because of her penchant for thinking that the grass was greener on the other side of the field. Alas, not all that glitters is gold.
Being a single mom has limited her dating choices. Not many men want to go all the way with her, especially, as she has two kids, and not just one. In Mimi’s case, the clean up woman did a very good job.
Remember, what you won’t do, another woman will. If you don’t want the clean up woman to enjoy your man, keep him, and know this, the grass only LOOKS like it is greener on the other side of the field…it truly isn’t.
I leave you with another verse from the clean up woman song.
“A clean up woman is a woman who
gets all the love we girls leave behind
The reason I know so much about her
Is because she picked up a man of mine”
